New York Style Sweet Onions in a Tomato Sauce an easy to make similar to a BBQ sauce but more jam like in consistency. A fun accompaniment to a standard sausage in a bun meal.
Recipe type: Sauces & Dressings
Cuisine: American
Servings: ½ cup
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large red onions, sliced
  • 1-3 teaspoons crushed red chilli flakes (1 mild 3 blow your head off)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 60g tomato sauce/ ketchup
  • 120ml water
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  1. In a small pot heat the oil and add in the onions, fry on low until the onions soften but don't brown, this will take around 10 minutes.
  2. Stir in the spices and allow the oils to be released.
  3. Add all the remaining ingredients and simmer until the sauce thickens, allow to cool before using.
  4. This sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge.
  5. The way to layer the sauces is bun, sausage, NY onion sauce, horseradish mustard and then the red pepper relish. But you can free style and add the sauces however you fancy.
If you like more sauce than onions only chop one onion, if you love onions chop too. I know it is called onion sauce but we liked the BBQ sauce more than the onions hence 1-2 onion range.
If your family likes more chilli increase the ratio, I only added a teaspoon of crushed red chillis and ½ teaspoon of cayenne and that was a lovely background heat.
